bakehouse theatre
The Bakehouse Theatre is an intimate, flexible theatre space, with an audience capacity of 100 situated at the east-end of Angas Street in the city of Adelaide. It is around 100 years old and exudes all the charm that goes with that age. Theatre go-ers during the 70's may remember that it was once known as the "Red Shed". On the demise of the Red Shed company it was taken over by Artistic Director Peter Green who changed its name to the Bakehouse Theatre to reflect its original origins as a bakery in the 1800's. This year the reigns of Artistic Director have been handed over to Pamela Munt who has previously worked at the theatre as Administrator, and whose own theatre company (Unseen Theatre Company) is a regular hirer of the theatre. The Bakehouse encourages and supports the work of emerging and established professional artists. Audiences will find that these artists could be presenting anything from light or black comedy, greek tragedies, brand new experimental works or more classic plays. There is always something interesting to choose from. With around 10 plays running per year, it is one of the busiest theatres in the state. Patrons of the theatre may rely on encountering a warm, welcoming atmosphere where there is no need to dress up, where they will usually run into someone they know in the industry and where you can even take your drinks into the theatre with you! All in all, the Bakehouse provides a very good reason to get off that TV couch and into live theatre!
