TheatreLink is a group of like-minded arts professionals, who have identified a hole in the Performing Arts sector - namely the lack of a single, community-focused portal for auditions, show annoucements and personal resumes. We are not interested in skewing the site towards one state, one company or one sector of our industry.

Darren Brealey
         (M)

Playwright Darren Brealey is the author of several plays, short film scripts, monologues and short stories. His book, Performing The Goat, A Collection Of One-Act Plays, was published in June 2006.
ISBN 1 84401 503 3

Brealey has completed his next full-length work ready for the stage entitled, Shattered Reflection. A story of a strong-headed and educated woman with a Masters Degree in Arts Science and Degrees in Business Management. Her role as the Divisional Manager of the Asia Pacific region for an international manufacturing company for truck engines and farming equipment dissatisfies her career goals. She finds the people she works with boorish and common. Without a tendency to commit to relationships and feel for true love, her only outlet for sex is rent boys on a Friday night. She suffers from a mental illness and personality disorder and this is exacerbated by her addition to a cocktail of illicit drugs and alcohol.

Brealey first came to public attention in 1996 when his play, The Meeting Place was produced during the Melbourne Fringe Festival. In 1998, Brealey’s next full-length work, Three Shorts was produced at Melbourne’s Workhouse Theatre. Performing The Goat followed in 1999 containing three one-act plays, as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. In the 2005 Melbourne Fringe Festival he co-wrote with friend, Stuart Pursell and produced Comfort Zone. Most recent is his play, Penniless Penny a one-act play was produced by Walking Into Bars as part of the 2008 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Also, 2008 sees Brealey’s one-act plays, Disturbing Mavis and The Mechanics being produced in Singapore as part of the Short and Sweet Singapore 2008 Festival.

Brealey learnt drama from the age of six with Arena Theatre and first appeared on stage at the Palais Theatre in St. Kilda, when he was ten, in the 1980 Gang Show. In addition to his training in theatre, he studied writing at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. (AFTRS). In August 2004, Brealey attended the Robert McKee, ‘Story Seminar’, claimed to be the world’s ultimate writing course taught by Hollywood’s master of the craft.

The Meeting Place was a critical and public success: “The Meeting Place was a simple even old fashioned story of family and loss. I rarely cry in the theatre - at least for emotional reasons - but there I was enjoying some new talent. And I was bawling, with the joy of it and of the magic of a good yarn well put, the tears running down my cheeks like a bloody baby.” (Ralph McLean - 3RRR). Brealey won a Special Recommendation Award for The Meeting Place in the Melbourne Fringe Performance Art Awards.

Three Shorts comprised of three self-contained plays: ‘Disturbing Mavis’, ‘The Stair’ and ‘Champagne Ladies’. Once again, critical and public reaction to the work was favourable, with ‘Champagne Ladies’ singled out for particular praise: “With Three Shorts, Darren Brealey has written an eclectic mixture of observations that manage, somehow, to connect … with the satirical ‘Champagne Ladies’ definitely my favourite” (Stage Whispers).

Performing The Goat was a strong production and gained a positive audience reaction and critical comment confirmed Brealey’s ability to create realistic, original characterisations and dialogue: “Darren Brealey delivers four humorous and often terrifyingly accurate portrayals … four short plays that capture colloquial Aussie stereotypes and presents them with hilarious accuracy” (Buzz Cuts).

Comfort Zone, co-written with friend Stuart Pursell was proven by its audience appreciation, the production received critical acclaim: “Comfort Zone has delivered a rare piece of new theatre that is hilariously self referential and thematically bold” (BNews).

Sitting in a room while watching Power Rangers, Alex thoughts on the acting were quite poor, and thought how he could perform a lot better. So at the age of 13, Alex knew he wanted to be an Actor.

His long expedition started in VCE drama and after quite a few positive notes from his instructor, Alex intended to move forwarded

After VCE, Alex went straight into a two year full time course titled small companies and community theatre, which Alex enjoyed wholeheartedly. The course gave Alex an extensive vision of the mechanics and what happens behind a theatre production also the tools needed in performing on stage. He walked away with several performances under his belt.

Not long after, Alex participated in a short course titled Acting for the camera with Peter Sardi, where he also received positive notes on his performing abilities.

Since mid 2006, Alex started taking funk and jazz (jazz 2008) classes to further his movement skills and acting scope. He completed performances with the dance group

Alex looks on to increase his knowledge and experience on stage and/or film.
Danny Marx Young fell late into music when he was 17. From there he travelled Germany and performed 30 dates in and around 35 days, which fuelled his passion for being a frontman. Upon his return, Young started a rock band where he entertained the local surf scene whilst building a following. Young came through to win a national song contest presented by 2DayFM’s Ugly Phil, with their song Waking Up. Think you have seen his face before? It is quite possible you may have as Young played several roles in Australian dramas such as All Saints, Home and Away and Breakers. He also did a season of Musical theatre and moonlighted for band Deep Squeeze. Young looked to bigger and better things as he established a band called Circlework. Touring the East Coast of Australia, the band played pubs, entertainment centers and venues that catered for all-ages. Liasing with the likes of Billy Thorpe and Molly Meldrum, Young received plenty of feedback in his time which included Billy Thorpe’s glowing review which claimed that Danny Marx Young had a singing style that stood out from other singers in the industry. It was then that Young began working with legendary producer Harry Vanda, who is renowned for his work writing and producing hits for a number of groups and solo singers including John Paul Young (Danny’s father), Rose Tattoo, The Angels and AC/DC. Recently Danny has performed with members of such bands as Leonardos Bride, Air Supply, Noiseworks, Southern Sons, Icehouse, The Dissociatives, And great artists such as Steve Balbi, Jack Jones, Harry Vanda, Tania Murray, Pete Northcote, Joseph Calderazzo, Rex Goh Just to name a few. Danny participated on the soundtrack for Australian film Razzle Dazzle doing a blistering cover of Angry Andersons "Bound For Glory" and also has just completed recording Vocals for Israeli troup Global warming and Pavex (Crystal Lake) recently being signed by Superstar Dj Jan Waynes label Cuepoint Records Which reached number 1 on the Eurodance hit Chart , Also reaching number 2 On the DanceRadio Chart In the Czhech Republic, Whilst still remaining Dance Charts all over Europe And UK!

The first time I ever acted in a show was in primary school in 1991, I was a witch in 'Sleeping Beauty' and only six years old. From that age I discovered I was able to mimic other people's accents, particularly from the television, starting from the Looney Tunes, The Muppets, Mel Brooks, etc.

The first time I ever sang solo was for my high school Presentation Night in 1997 it was a rendition of the 'Jonah Man Jazz', I was twelve years old and I sang in front of my peers, their parents, my teachers and principal.

My first ever stage play was 'Wolfstock' in 2001, where I performed a heartfelt solo and the reaction was immense. It was an amazing feeling.

My musical/vocal influences include the great Julie Andrews, the late Audrey Hepburn, Mariah Carey, Shirley Bassey, Emmy Rossum, Judy Garland and Sarah Brightman.

My acting/entertaining influences include Gene Wilder, Robin Williams, Shaun Micallef, the late Jim Henson and the legendary Mel Brooks
