Return to the Forbidden Planet, Bob Carltons musical version, which incorporates rock and rhythm-and-blues of the 1950s and 1960s, is a case of Shakespeare rattled and rolled. The show won an Olivier award as best musical in London, in a backlash beating out Miss Saigon. On stage the worlds of Shakespeare, science fiction and classic rock collide. Musical numbers include such rock classics as Great Balls of Fire (Tempest, Cookie, Crew) Good Vibrations (Tempest, Ariel, Crew) Why Must I Be A Teenager In Love? (Miranda) All Shook Up (Prospero, Miranda, Cookie) Gloria (Crew) 5-4-3-2-1 (Crew) Dont Let Me Be Misunderstood (Science Officer) Whos Sorry Now? (Ariel) Only the Lonely (Cookie, Bosun Arras) Shake, Rattle and Roll (Ariel, Cookie, Crew) The Young Ones (Captain Tempest, Miranda) and many many more! Monash University Academy of Performing Arts will produce this show in September 2012 and will be drawing on the wide student population across its many campuses and well as interested performers from across Melbourne. Our production is going to be UNIQUE! SEXY, TRASHY, OFF THE WALL AND VERY FUNNY! And we have been able to get Fr. Bob Maguire to be our on screen Newscaster!!!! Principal roles available: Captain Tempest A stardust Captain, square jawed “Boy’s Own” paper hero and pipe smoker Doctor Prospero A mad scientist Miranda Virgin and would-be Homecoming Queen Ariel A soft hearted robot Cookie The ship’s cook, a hopeless romantic Science officer (Gloria) A woman with a mysterious past Bosun Arras All round good guy Navigation officer A woman who knows where she is going PLUS Damage Control Crew and assorted ships crew members AUDITION TIMES: Wednesday the 30TH MAY 4.00pm -8.00pm Thursday the 31ST MAY from 4.00pm-8.00pm Friday the 1st of JUNE from 4pm onwards – call backs All auditions will be held at Normanby House, 100 Normanby Road, Clayton. This building is on the northern perimeter of Monash Clayton Campus . Normanby House is a Monash residential college and the Academy occupies the eastern (Howleys Road) end right on the car park. Auditions will be held in groups of around 20. WHAT WE REQUIRE: The best and brightest performers from across Monash University to develop an imaginative and ingenious journey for our audience. All performers will require some movement ability, strong vocal ability, and excellent dramatic and comedic skill. We are also very interested in actors who can play instruments, or musicians who can act and sing (or are willing to give it a go.) If you have any extra special skills please tell us at your audition. Perhaps your talents extend further to acrobatics, fire breathing, stilt walking, back flips, juggling. We want to know about this. OUR TEAM We have engaged two of Melbourne’s brightest young talents as Musical Director and Director. Adrian Portell has just completed seasons working as Assistant Musical Director on Mary Poppins in Sydney and Melbourne. Bryce Ives joins the team as Director. Bryce is well known for his edgy directorial work in both musicals and theatre in such productions as The Margaret Fulton Musical, Chants Des Catacombs, The History Boys, Sweet Charity and Tracey Harvey Smokin’. Our design team is also fabulous - Rob Sowinski is set designer and Eugyeene Teh is costume designer. WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO PREPARE: 1. Prepare 30 seconds of a song that shows your range at it’s best. Songs from the sixties, seventies and eighties are appropriate. PLEASE DO NOT SING A SONG FROM Gilbert and Sullivan, operetta, Lerner and Lowe, Rogers and Heart, Rogers and Hammerstein, Les Miserables, Jekyll and Hyde, or Rent. If you do, we may kill you. Please ensure all sheet music is in the right key. We will provide an audition pianist. Please provide sheet music. Backing tracks are OK. 2. If you play a musical instrument bring it in. We are very keen to create a live performance that involves the musicians being central to the performance. So if you play an instrument, bring it along and prepare a short performance on your instrument. 3. Be ready to tell a joke. We want to work with people who make us laugh. Tell a joke. It can be daggy, naughty. Just be ready to tell us the joke. (But don’t stress about this, seriously the daggier the joke, the better….) THE BAND We are also interested in hearing from musicians who might like to be one of the on stage band members – trumpet, sax, trombone, lead and bass guitar, drums and keys. Please call Fred Wallace on 9905 4687 if you are interested. SOME GUIDELINES: Here are a few guidelines to help maximise your chances of success at audition: • Rehearse your chosen song thoroughly. You should aim to present to performance standard (e.g., no holding lyrics) and show off your vocal range. • We want you to wow us in thirty seconds • Arrive for audition early. • Relax. • Prepare your monologue, with a clear character in mind. Part of the audition may involve singing scales and other vocal exercises. Please note due to time constraints not all auditionees will not be asked to complete both their vocal piece and or monologue. This should not be taken as an indication of the success or otherwise of your audition but rather will be dictated by the large number of auditionees the production team will need to see. Extra material from the script (nothing overwhelming) will be handed out for callbacks if required. HOW WE WILL CAST: While talent is the primary consideration when casting, level of commitment will also be a strong consideration and final choices for principal and company roles will be made with this firmly in mind. The production team will not hesitate to remove a cast member from the show if commitment becomes an issue. All auditionees will need to do a singing, speaking and movement.dance audition. There are no ‘just dancers’ or ‘just singers’. All positions in the cast are up for selection during the audition period. It takes a combination of attributes to be cast in a show. It is an overall package, the right look and feel and chemistry. It is that ‘something’ that grabs the panel’s attention. Please note that all cast and band positions are volunteer- there are not payments for your time. This will however be an amazing opportunity to work on a fully produced production with a great creative team. WHAT AM I COMMITTING TOO: Most rehearsals will be conducted at the Normanby House Studio, which is on the northern perimeter of the Clayton Campus. The final rehearsal schedule will be complete shortly- but it will require a commitment to two evenings a week from towards the end of July- at this stage Monday and Tuesday evenings 6.30pm-10.00pm. This will continue thru to the production week starting Sunday Sept 23. Please note that there will be some day rehearsals required Sept 24, 25 and a matinee performance 2.00pm Friday Sept 28. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION AND AUDITION TIMES PLEASE EMAIL Hannah Hookey at Hannah.hookey@monash.edu or call Fred Wallace 9905 4687 for further information. Synopsis Duke Frederick has usurped the title and throne of his elder brother, Duke Senior, and forced him into exile. Duke Senior finds a new life with his loyal followers and friends in the Forest of Arden, leaving his daughter, Rosalind, behind at the court. Into this situation, enter Orlando and Oliver de Boys, two brothers divided by enmity. Orlando has long been mistreated by his brother and enters a wrestling match overseen by the new Duke to prove his strength. During this match he attracts the romance of Rosalind and the anger of Oliver and is forced into exile. As pity for the exiled Dukes daughter grows across the land, Rosalind is then forced into exile by her uncle, and her cousin Celia, Fredericks daughter and Rosalinds best friend, declares that she will accompany her to the Forest of Arden, but to do this, Rosalind decides she must travel dressed as a man. As you like it is one of Shakespeares great love stories, cleverly testing relationships between family, lovers, best friends and those that serve. Fri, 18 May 2012 09:49:25 GMT Red Hot and Cole - COLE PORTER Musical 10DD7970-0672-475A-AC4E-102F0218654C http://www.theatrelink.com.au/auditions/Red_Hot_and_Cole_-_COLE_PORTER_Musical Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc is proud to announce auditions for their May 2012 production of Red Hot and Cole, which will be performed at the Williamstown Mechanics Institute from Friday 4th May to Saturday 19th May 2012. Further information and character descriptions at WMTCs website http://www.wmtc.org.au Red Hot and Cole celebrates the life of one of the great songwriting masters of this century, Cole Porter. This production traces Coles career from Indiana to the world stages of New York, London, Paris and Venice, through his marriage, his friendships with the greats of his age and the tragic riding accident that crippled him in mid-career, physically, but not artistically. Red Hot and Cole bubbles with songs that have become international standards, from such classic shows and movies as “Anything Goes,” “Kiss Me Kate,” “High Society” and “Can-Can” among others. The show features over 25 Cole Porter standards, including Night And Day, I Love Paris, Anything Goes, Lets Do It, Miss Otis Regrets, Just One Of Those Things, In The Still Of The Night and My Heart Belongs To Daddy. A scintillating mixture of biography and song, Red Hot and Cole celebrates the great American songwriter who brought style, elegance and sophistication to the stages and soundstages of Broadway and Hollywood, delighting the world with his devilishly clever rhymes, fresh and unexpected melodies and sassy, sexy sensibility. It’s a champagne tribute to a glittering age gone by, and the man and talent who was Cole Porter. Fri, 18 May 2012 09:49:25 GMT
