Blood Brothers

Based loosely on the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas, père, Blood Brothers is a contemporary nature vs. nurture plot, revolving around fraternal twins who were separated at birth. The twins' different backgrounds take them to opposite ends of the social spectrum, one becoming an Oxbridge-graduated councillor and the other unemployed and in prison. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a tear in their friendship and leading the tragic deaths of both brothers.

Full Details : ‘Blood Brothers’ is, at first, a heart-warming story of Mickey and Edward, twin brothers separated at birth, brought together again through friendship. However, their familial relationship is concealed by their guardians who strive to keep them apart because of superstitious beliefs.
Despite a separation forced by the rehousing of Mickey’s family, their lives continue to intertwine, although the deep divisions between the privileged life of Edward and Mickey’s poverty-stricken existence are wholly apparent. As they try to conquer the social divisions which hinder their friendship, they must deal with the harsh realities of class consciousness; Edward goes on to study at Oxford whilst Mickey is forced into a life of crime through unemployment.
As adults, they are caught up in a vicious love triangle with Mickey’s childhood sweetheart Linda. Mickey’s imprisonment and subsequent depression pushes Linda into the arms of the conciliatory Edward. A desperate Mickey takes drastic action against his fraternal twin which will ultimately exposes their true identities.
Willy Russell originally wrote Blood Brothers as a play to be performed by youth theatre groups and schools. He later developed the musical version, which debuted in 1983 with Barbara Dickson in the lead role and won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The current West End revival is one of the longest-running musical productions in history, opening in 1988 and still running as of 2011.
Our production is directed by David Russell and Francis Voon with musical direction by Jeff Fisher.
