Full Details : In a city in the near future, a twenty-year drought has caused a terrible water shortage, making private toilets unthinkable. To control water consumption, people have to pay to use public amenities (that is, public toilets) controlled by a private company. There are harsh laws ensuring that people “pay to pee”, so when the fees for using the amenities are raised, a hero rallies the poor to rise up against the corporate greed and government incompetence, setting in progress a chain of events that will change the city forever.
Starting with and absurd and exaggerated premise, “Urinetown” draws attention to some of the most pressing problems in contemporary society - environmental conservation, corporate control, corruption, the growing divide between rich and poor, and the unintended consequences of actions – all wrapped up in the familiar, happy package of a Broadway musical.
Performances of “Urinetown” are on 19th, 20th, 26th and 27th October at 8pm and 20th and 27th October at 2pm at Normanhurst Uniting Church, Buckingham Avenue, Normanhurst.
